Lady Vol Turner takes charge ... and more

Lady Vol Turner takes charge

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. -- Senior Marci Turner stepped up to lead the Lady Vol golf team through the first round of the Bryan National Collegiate in Browns Summit, N.C., on Friday. After withdrawing from the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic last week, the All-American came back strong to tie for 11th of 93 players. Turner is joined by junior Nicole Smith and sophomores Ginny Brown, Diana CantĂș and Angela Oh this weekend at the Bryan Park Players Course.

A two-over-par 74 from Turner and a score of 75 from Oh helped the team to an 11th-place, first-round total of 307. CantĂș came in tied at No. 42 with a 78, Smith is tied for 63rd with a score of 80, while Brown is in a tie for 69th after carding an 81. Duke is at the top of the team leader board with a six-over-par 294, while College of Charleston's Steffi Kirchmayr scored the lowest round of the day (69).

The Lady Vols will be paired with players from Wake Forest and Florida State today.

Abbott named to Olympic team

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Consider it a lifelong dream fulfilled for former Tennessee Lady Vol softball pitcher Monica Abbott. The Salinas, Calif., product was chosen for the official 15-member roster of the U.S. Women's Olympic Softball Team, according to Friday's release from USA Softball and the Amateur Softball Association (ASA). Abbott joins fellow hurlers and prior Olympians Jennie Finch and Cat Osterman in formulating the daunting U.S. pitching staff for head coach Mike Candrea.

Three commit to MC soccer

Maryville College women's soccer got two commitments for the coming year from Lebanon's Felicia Maldonado and Brentwood's Alex Wingo. Maldonado was a standout in midfield and defense for the Rebels under coach Jimmy Burchett, and Wingo was a standout in midfield and forward for the Bruins under coach Mike Purcell.

Maldonado was a four-year letterman in varsity soccer and garnered many accolades such as Franklin High School MVP, Region defensive MVP, All-District, All-Region, and All-State. Maldonado also played club soccer for the Nashville Metros. Wingo was a four-year letterman in varsity soccer and a two-time state quarter finalist during her time as a Bruin.

The men's soccer team also gained another commitment. Hunter Acosta will continue his education, and soccer career at Maryville College. He was a midfielder for the Purple Wave under coach Rogerio Lima. A four-year letterman in varsity soccer, Acosta was a two-time state finalist with the Purple Wave. Acosta also played club soccer for Memphis Futbol Club.

Predators down Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Dan Ellis shut out Columbus for the second time in four days, and the Nashville Predators mastered the Blue Jackets again with a 4-0 win on Friday night. Jan Hlavac and Radek Bonk scored on consecutive shots in the second period and Ellis made a career-high 43 saves.

Correction

In condensing individual results submitted from a high school track and field meet, the sports department inadvertently omitted the name of Maryville's Julia Petree as a first-place winner at South-Doyle. Petree won both the 100 meter dash and the 400m dash. The Daily Times regrets the error.
