Reeves honored at conference

From Staff and Wire Reports

The Tennessee Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers recognized Blount County Commissioner Wendy Pitts Reeves with its "Public Official of the Year Award" for 2008. The award was announced to the 700 attendees at the National Association of Social Workers legislative conference at the Nashville Convention Center.

From a slate of statewide candidates, Reeves was selected for her "outstanding public service to her community," the National Association of Social Workers said in a written release.

Connie Taylor, a Blount County resident and member of the National Association of Social Workers board, nominated Reeves. In addition to serving on the County Commission, Reeves is also a licensed clinical social worker.

"Commissioner Reeves brings all the skills and core values of professional social work to her public service," Taylor said. "She is a wonderful role model for others, especially women.

"Politics can be a challenging arena for anyone, but especially so for someone who seeks to uphold the dignity and worth of each citizen and to advocate for those who may not be able to advocate for themselves."

According to Taylor, Reeves has a long history of giving back to the Blount County community. Reeves is currently serving her second term on the Tennessee Economic Council for Women, chaired the Sister to Sister Summit sponsored by the Maryville Branch of American Association of University Women and worked to promote professional development for women through the Blount County Chamber.

Reeves was elected to the Blount County Commission in 2006.
