David, Marty Black, Historic Trust are appreciated for efforts
Most of us treasure structures of historical significance. Few of us have the opportunity and assets to preserve such structures. Unfortunately, too many have little concern for our past. This past week, attorneys David and Marty Black received the top award of the Blount County Historic Trust for the preservation of the R. R. Kramer residence and the purchase and restoration of other historic homes in the neighborhood. That top award is the Oak Shingle. The restored Kramer residence houses the Blacks' law offices on Cates Street at West Lamar Alexander Parkway.
They were honored for "their tireless efforts to restore one of Maryville's oldest neighborhoods and for the commitment and dedication they have brought to historic preservation and restoration for all of Blount County."
Alcoa First United Methodist Church received the Heritage Design Award for its commitment to preserving the architectural integrity of one of Alcoa's most prized possessions during the expansion of the church facilities.
The city of Maryville received the Vanguard Award for persistent leadership in preserving, enhancing and celebrating the historic character of the city.
Patrick McIntyre Jr., executive director of the Tennessee Historical Commission, was speaker for the event and visited some of the local historic sites the next morning.
Geneva Williams Harrison succeeded Susan Jones as president of the trust for the coming year.
In addition to being an educational and enjoyable site for most residents, these historic structures also help us to see where we and our ancestors have been in life and how far we have come.
Even those who may not have a great appreciation for history and remnants of earlier days should greatly appreciate what the Blount County Historic Trust does to save a slice of history.
Lest we think there is no interest or value in the past, millions travel from around the world to view the hundreds-of-years-old remains of Greek civilizations and the Roman Empire.
