Point guard joins UT ... and more
KNOXVILLE — Junior college point guard Bobby Maze has signed a letter of intent to play at Tennessee.Tennessee was looking for immediate help at the point guard position after announcing May 2 that point guard Ramar Smith would not return to play for the Vols.
The team’s only other point guard with significant playing experience, Jordan Howell, is graduating.
Maze transferred from Oklahoma last year to Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, where he averaged 20.7 points, 6.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound junior college All-American also led his team with 55 steals.
Student dies after collision in PE class
LENOIR CITY — An East Tennessee high school freshman who was playing flag football during a physical education class has died after colliding with another student.
Lenoir City schools Superintendent Wayne Miller told a Knoxville newspaper that 14-year-old Coty Bluford went up for a pass during the game Wednesday and hit heads with another boy. Bluford was pronounced dead at University of Tennessee Medical Center.
