The Alcoa Board of Education appropriated $6 million for two school renovation projects and a renovation of the high school's football locker room at a called meeting Tuesday.
Two representatives from Hickory Construction offered estimates for the cost of renovating the elementary and alternative schools.
A preliminary budget breakdown estimated elementary school renovations would cost $4,736,355 and an additional $515,000 for new front entrance.
The cost of renovating the former Alcoa Credit Union on Springbrook Road -- which will become the system's off-campus alternative school -- has been estimated at $450,865.
The proposed Alcoa Elementary School renovation project would:
Repair and repave existing parking lots
Install a new sprinkler system
Install new heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
Upgrade electrical and data/communications systems
Upgrade restrooms to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act
Remodel the school's exterior wall to gain nearly 5,000 square feet in floor space
Provide modular storage cabinets in classroom pods and corridors
Install new acoustical ceilings and floor coverings
Construct a new formal covered entrance in the existing courtyard
The proposed alternative school project will make the building more suitable for students. The proposed work includes installation of an elevator, fire alarm, sprinkler system, new HVAC mechanical system and improved handicap access.
All subcontracted work will now be competitively bid.
The board also approved $55,000 to renovate the high school's football locker room. The money would fund 80 new welded lockers with lockable security boxes and footlockers, a new floor and four new coats of paint for the locker room.
School board members then approved the modular building located at 1024 Springbrook Road to be the temporary site for the system's alternative school until the credit hall renovations are complete.
