No changes in Alcoa garbage collection
The City of Alcoa will make no changes in the residential garbage collection schedule for the Labor Day holiday on Sept. 1.
Residential and commercial routes will be run on schedule. For more information, call the Alcoa Sanitation Division at 380-4815 or 380-4800.
The Alcoa/Maryville/Blount County Landfill will also remain open on Labor Day, with regular hours of 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Police rape defense course slated
Maryville Police Department will offer a free 12-hour Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) course Sept. 18-20.
The course will teach options of self-defense to a woman who is attacked. The class will be hosted by the Maryville Police Department and taught by certified RAD instructors.
RAD is based on a defense system that does not require extensive training or exceptional physical prowess.
The RAD class will be held at the Maryville Police Department at the Maryville Municipal Center, 400 W. Broadway Ave. The Sept. 18 and Sept. 19 classes will be held from 6-9 p.m. The final class on Sept. 20 will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Maryville High School.

Volunteers needed to help veterans
Volunteers are needed to assist veterans who are patients at the Department of Veterans Affairs Knoxville Outpatient Clinic.
The main clinic is off the Cedar Bluff Road exit from I-40/I-275 off Downtown West Road.
Volunteer assistance is needed for the following duties:
Drivers to transport veterans from the Knoxville Clinic and Annex to the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center at Mountain Home for appointments;
Schedule veterans to ride vans for follow-up appointments;
Clerical assistance in the clinic.

ARC Automotive lays off 51 workers
KNOXVILLE -- ARC Automotive has laid off 51 hourly workers from its Knoxville headquarters.
The layoffs are effective Tuesday. The company says employees will receive pay and benefits in line with their contract.
ARC Automotive, Inc. builds inflators for airbags, which are used in cars from DaimlerChrysler, Ford, GM, Hyundai, and Volkswagen. It is a unit of Sequa Corp.

The City of Maryville Engineering and Public Works will be working on Cherokee Street between Sevierville Road and Crest Road today from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m.
