A warrant was filed on Thursday night charging Roy Sherman Myers, 59, Madisonville, with aggravated assault and Myers will be asked to turn himself in on the charge today, Alcoa Police Detective Kris Sanders said.

A security director at Hiwassee College who has "special deputy status" with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office was accused of threatening a Friendsville man with a shotgun.

A warrant was filed Thursday night charging Roy Sherman Myers, 59, Madisonville, with aggravated assault. Myers will be asked to turn himself in on the charge today, Alcoa Police Detective Kris Sanders said.

Sanders said the incident occurred on Saturday during a "road rage" situation with a Friendsville man who was with his 8-year-old son.

The 41-year-old Friendsville man reported at 10:13 a.m. that he with was driving eastbound on Middlesettlements Road and was at the intersection with Hunter's Crossing Drive attempting to make a left turn while he had a green turn arrow.

At that time, another individual driving westbound on Middlesettlements Road was making a right turn onto Hunter's Crossing Drive and the Friendsville man said the driver cut him off, an Alcoa police report said.

"This frustrated him and hand gestures were made by both parties," the report said.

Both drivers came to a four-way stop on Hunter's Crossing Drive at Lowe's, 1098 Hunters Crossing Drive, Alcoa, and the Friendsville man told the other driver -- later identified as Myers -- that "he needs to drive more careful," the report said.

Sanders said the Friendsville man drove past Lowe's and waited to turn into the parking lot, trying to avoid further confrontation. When the Friendsville man finally pulled into the parking lot, he saw Myers standing at the back of his pickup truck. They were about 25 to 30 feet apart, and the Friendsville man had his window down.

Shotgun displayed

The Friendsville man reported that Myers went to the bed of his truck, opened his toolbox, retrieved a shotgun, loaded it with one shell "and pulled the hammer back," the report said. When the Friendsville man's vehicle got close to Myers, he told officers that Myers said, "Buddy, you take your a-- on up there or I'll kill you right here."

Sanders said the Friendsville man told Myers that he had his license tag number, drove away and flagged down a bystander to call 9-1-1.

The Friendsville man's 8-year-old son corroborated the story.

Myers had left the scene by the time officers arrived, but a vehicle matching his truck's description was located by a Maryville police officer at Home Depot in Maryville, Sanders said.

No one was in the truck when the officer found it, but Myers sought him out. Officers reported that Myers "handed a Monroe County Sheriff's ID card and stated, 'I think you're looking for me.'"

Myers told an Alcoa police officer that he was on "auxiliary status" with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and was head of security at Hiwassee College in Madisonville, the report said.

Sanders said Myers told officers that he was unaware that he cut the Friendsville man off. He said he first saw the Friendsville man at the intersection next to Lowe's where he said the man was cursing and yelling at him.

Myers reported that he parked his truck and got out, and when he saw the Friendsville man "flying up" on him in the parking lot, he got his shotgun out of the toolbox. Myers denied ever threatening the Friendsville man with it.

The shotgun and box of shells were retrieved from Myers' truck and placed into evidence, Sander said. Myers was placed on a 48-hour investigative hold and was taken to the Blount County Jail on Saturday. Sanders said Myers was released at the end of the hold because detectives needed to talk to another witness and gather more evidence.

Status of the case

Since then, Sanders said Myers had checked in with detectives on the status of the case.

"He has cooperated with the investigation," Sanders said.

On Saturday, Monroe County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Bryan Graves confirmed that Myers had "special deputy status" with the office, but said Myers was not an employee and is paid by the college. Graves said Myers works security for Hiwassee College and the arrangement with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office gives him a badge number and the ability to contact dispatch.
