The streak lives.
With a 20-13 victory over Alcoa Friday night at Shields Stadium, Maryville improved its winning binge to 62 games. The Rebels (2-0) have now defeated the Tornadoes (1-1) eight straight times since the last Alcoa win in 2000.
"I was real proud of them tonight," Maryville coach George Quarles said. "We got some turnovers, and we took advantage of them.
"These guys don't want to lose. I told them before the game to rally together and they did that."
Although Alcoa took an early 7-0 lead, scoring on its initial possession, Maryville tied the contest at 7-7 and took a 13-7 halftime lead on a pair of field goals by Zach Sharp.
The Tornadoes put another drive together in the third quarter, scoring when a Taharin Tyson fumbled and Marcel Walden recovered in the end zone. Alcoa failed to take a one-point lead when the snap for the extra point bounced before reaching the holder.
In the final quarter, Maryville picked up what turned out to be the winning TD on a Philip Juhlin to Buddy Jones pass.
That was enough of an advantage to fire the Rebel defense, which pressured Alcoa quarterback Chase James into desperation throws down the field as time ran out.
