City Council to appoint new member

Maryville City Council is accepting resumes from people interested in filling a vacant seat on City Council.

Resumes should be sent to city attorney David Black, 329 Cates St., Maryville, TN 37801.

The deadline is Sept. 20. Applicants must have been a resident of the City of Maryville for at least one year.

Following the death of Councilman Ron Ivens in July, the City Council is currently minus one member. According to the city's charter, it is the council's duty to make the appointment.

Discount Tobacco receives beer permit

Maryville Beer Board Tuesday issued an off-premise permit to Shiv Baba Corporation/Nimeshbhai M. Patel, doing business as the 411 Discount Tobacco and Beer, 2729 U.S. 411 South.

Screening set for children

The Blount County school system provides free developmental screening for children 3 to 6 years old who live in Blount County.

If you are concerned about your child's speech or any other area of development, the school system will provide free screening and referrals.

To make an appointment, please call Judy Wilson at the Blount County Schools' central office at 984-1212.

UT receives $16M for institute

KNOXVILLE — The National Science Foundation has awarded the University of Tennessee $16 million to create a high-tech math and biology institute at the Knoxville campus.

The National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis is expected to draw more than 600 mathematicians and biologists from around the world to participate in workshops and conferences.

They will study pressing problems such as animal disease and wildfire control.

UT competed with 18 other research institutions for the grant.

The institute will partner with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, computer technology company IBM and software developer ESRI.
