Lady Vol point guard Cait McMahan, who is from Blount County, has undergone successful knee surgery, UT associate athletics director for sports medicine Jenny Moshak announced Wednesday.
"Dr. Russ Betcher and Dr. Greg Mathien, UT team orthopaedists, performed arthroscopic surgery on Cait's right knee at the UT Medical Center," said Moshak. "Basically, it was a clean-up job.
"Cait had been experiencing some discomfort in the knee and conservative treatments did not address the problems. Today's scope eliminated some loose bodies, smoothed out joint surface irregularities and addressed a small lateral meniscus tear. Her rehab will begin immediately and we'll evaluate her knee day-by-day," said Moshak.
Moshak said she anticipates McMahan being ready to go when official Lady Vol practice begins on Oct. 17.
This surgery comes after McMahan sat out the 2007-08 season following an extensive surgery on June 6, 2007, to repair a lesion on the articular cartilage in her right knee. The 5-foot-4 guard, a former standout at Heritage High, originally tore the anterior cruciate ligament in the same knee on Nov. 29, 2005, while playing in a prep game.
As a Lady Vol rookie in the 2006-07 NCAA Championship season, she played in 35 games and earned one starting assignment. She averaged 2.4 ppg, 1.2 rpg, 1.4 apg while logging almost 14 minutes per contest.
This season, McMahan is vying for a spot in the starting line-up at point guard. The Lady Vols play in their first exhibition game on Nov. 6 against Carson-Newman in Thompson-Boling Arena.
