United Way Volunteer Listing for Monday, September 8, 2008

United Way of Blount County community partners and other nonprofit organizations need volunteers. Here is a list of current needs:

BLOUNT COUNTY VOLUNTEER RESCUE SQUAD needs emergency and non-emergency rescue-related activities including but not limited to motor vehicle accidents, water rescues (lake and river), technical rope rescues (high and low angle), searching for lost persons, Special Services Unit (support) and volunteers to perform administrative duties to include operating a business office. No skills necessary, training will be provided inhouse. Please contact Chief Tommy Bowers, Capt. Patrick McGinley, Jerry Bennett or Jason Sisk at 865-984-9315.

BLOUNT COUNTY ADULT EDUCATION needs volunteer tutors to work with adults who need to improve their reading, math or English skills. Both day and evening schedules are available. Instructional materials and tutor training will be provided. For more information or to volunteer, please call Carol Ergenbright at 982-8998.

SAFE HAVEN CENTER needs volunteers to do office work and special events. No special skills necessary. Days and times are Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. If interested, please contact Holly Fuquay at 865-558-9040.

BLOUNT COUNTY SCHOOLS seeks volunteers to give one hour, one day a week to read with a student. Each volunteer will be trained and materials will be provided. The objective is to ensure that every child will be able to read well and independently. If you are interested in making a difference in a child’s life by participating in this program, please call Mary Jane Jones at 984-1212 ext. 2167 or 681-2771.

BLOUNT COUNTY COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY needs volunteers to deliver meals to the home bound either on a scheduled route, emergency back-up basis, or to cover those on vacation. Requirements are a valid driver’s license and an insured vehicle. This is perfect for those who home-school. The agency is usually closed when Blount County Schools are closed, most holidays and every weekend. You may take your children on your route. The route will take approximately 1½ to 2 hours, one day a month, a week or bi-weekly. If you would like to assist the elderly live independently, please contact Colleen at 983-8411.

THE GATE-GATEWAY TO INDEPENDENCE seeks volunteers who can provide assistance to severely disabled young adults during games, music, arts and crafts on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers must enjoy working with individuals who have disabilities, be dependable and enjoy games. Interested individuals should contact Jo Bennett at 680-6789.

AMERICAN RED CROSS needs Disaster Action Team members to help with local, small-scale disasters; administrative volunteers to help with mailings, data entry and answering phones, health and safety course instructors, and youth program instructors. Skills necessary include a compassionate and caring attitude, flexibility and Red Cross training courses for health and safety instructors and advanced disaster volunteers. Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 24/7 for emergency responders. Interested individuals should call Betty Hale at 865-983-0821. American Red Cross also needs junior manikins, choking Charlie, Adult & Junior soft carrying cases, AED Trainer, face shields, training DVDs.
