A 25-year-old Maryville man was killed after his vehicle hit another vehicle head-on while traveling on West Lamar Alexander Parkway Monday night. The woman occupying the other vehicle was critically injured.
Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper John Pedigo said that Mark Anthony Payne, 25, Edna Garland Road, Maryville, was dead on arrival of emergency personnel at about 10 p.m.
Brittany Lynn Green, 21, Venice, Fla., was flown by Lifestar helicopter to University of Tennessee Medical Center where she was in critical condition today.
Pedigo said that Payne was driving a Ford F-150 southbound on U.S. 321. Green was traveling northbound in a 2001 Saturn Ion.
“When (Payne) passed Lane Drive, he lost control of his vehicle and crossed the median,” Pedigo said.
Payne’s vehicle traveled into the northbound lanes of the highway, hitting Green’s car head-on. She was traveling in the right-hand lane of the northbound side of the road.
“After hitting the Saturn, the Ford F-150 flipped over - partially ejecting (Payne) and pinning him under the vehicle,” Pedigo said.
Payne was not wearing his seat belt. Pedigo said a toxicology report has been requested on Payne.
Green’s dog was ejected from her vehicle during the crash, and Green was pinned inside. The insides of the vehicle were twisted around her, making it difficult for emergency personnel to extract her.
Members of Friendsville Volunteer Fire Department, Maryville Fire Department, Blount County Volunteer Rescue Squad and Rural/Metro Ambulance Service worked for more than an hour to free Green from the vehicle. She was wearing her seat belt.
Lifestar landed on the highway and then took Green to the hospital.
Green was following behind another vehicle driven by her fiance. Both of their vehicles were packed with their belongings and they were reportedly moving to Friendsville from Florida.
After the truck and car collided, another vehicle traveling northbound hit a tool box that had fallen off of Payne’s truck. That driver was not reported as injured.
Monday’s crash resulted in the 14th traffic fatality in Blount County this year. At this time in 2007, there had been 21 traffic fatalities.
