Scares, spooky activities abound as Halloween draws nigh

The spooky season is upon us, and with it comes a variety of Halloween activities around East Tennessee. Here's a list of events taking place through the end of the month:
Cherokee Caverns, 8524 Oak Ridge Highway (between Karns and Solway) in Knoxville, will feature its 20th and final "Haunted Cave" from 7-10 p.m. Oct. 17 and 18, Oct. 24 and 25 and Oct. 30 and 31. Admission is $12 per person; the cave is handicap-accessible, and concessions will be available. A $2 discount is offered with a canned food donation to Hawks Helping Others. The "Haunted Cave" is not recommended for children younger than 8. For more information, call 257-2458 or visit www.thehauntedcave.net.
The Oakes Farm Corn Maze "Trail of Doom" in Corryton will operate on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 25, as well as each day of the week from Monday, Oct. 27 through Saturday, Nov. 1. Admission is $15 for adults and $13 for kids ages 10 and younger. The "Trail of Doom" opens at sundown. (Not recommended for small children). The Haunted Trail of Fears has moved from the woods of Loudon to the Flea Market of Sweetwater, presenting "The House." The flea market is located just off Exit 60 from Interstate 75, and "The House" is open from 6-11 p.m. Oct. 17, noon to 11 p.m. Oct. 18 and 19 and, starting Oct. 24, 6-11 p.m. on week nights and noon to 11 p.m. on weekends. The 22nd Annual Boo! at the Zoo takes place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 16-19 and Oct. 23-26 at the Knoxville Zoo, off exit 392 from Interstate 40 in East Knoxville. Participants can stroll down the Boo! trail for trick-or-treating or take other paths to Kids Cove and enjoy karaoke at the Monster Mash, meet costumed characters, play games, ride the Haunted Carousel and more. Admission is $6, plus $4 for parking, and children younger than 2 are admitted free. No animals will be on exhibit during the festivities. For more information, call 637-5331.
The Ninth Annual 2007 Corn Maze will be haunted every night through Oct. 31 at Maple Lane Farms, on Maple Lane in Greenback (off Morganton Road). Hours are from dusk until 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and dusk until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Participants will be subject to the terrorization of spooks, chainsaw-wielding madmen and gorillas within the maze. Bring a flashlight or buy a glow stick at the farm. Admission is $10 for ages 12 and older and $8 for ages 6-11. Call 856-3511 for more information.
James White's Fort will be the launching point for "Hearthscares: The Walking Tour of Ghostly Knoxville," which takes place at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22-26 and Oct. 29-30, starting at the fort, located at the intersection of Hill Avenue and Hall of Fame Drive in downtown Knoxville. The tours, which last an hour and 15 minutes, will visit the sites of some of Knoxville's best-kept secrets and cover about a mile. Admission is $8 for adults 13 and older and $6 for children ages 5-12. For more information, call 525-6514.
Blount Mansion will present its annual Ghosts and Ghouls Walking Tour of downtown Knoxville at 7 p.m. Oct. 27-31. Costumed guides will lead groups by lantern light through downtown streets to the places where tales of bravery, murder and intrigue originally took place. Admission is $8 for adults ($6 for students), and the mansion is located at 200 W. Hill Ave. in downtown Knoxville. For more information, call 525-2375.
The Town of Farragut will hold its 10th annual Freaky Friday Fright Nite from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 24 at Mayor Bob Leonard Park on Watt Road. The event will provide a safe place for children to participate in Halloween activities while benefiting the Knoxville Ronald McDonald House. Children age 12 and younger and in costume are invited to trick-or-treat around the walk trail at the park. Local businesses, community groups and town volunteers will hand out the treats, provide games with prizes, assist with cookie decorating and serve refreshments. For more information, call 966-7057.
"The Body Farm: A Haunted Forest" will take place in Niota, Tenn. (near Sweetwater) to benefit the Union Grove Fire Department. Hours are from 6-9:30 p.m. Oct. 26 and 27. Admission is $2. Visit www.thebodyfarm.net for more information.
The Blount County Parks and Recreation Department will host the annual Halloween Fun event for ages 3-12 at the Everett Recreation Center in Maryville from 6-9:30 p.m. Oct. 25. Guests are encouraged to get there early in order to take part in most of the activities for the evening. Activities include carnival games, magic shows, a candy hunt, costume contests, Halloween crafts and more. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is $6 for children registered through Oct. 24, and $8 the day of the event. (Accompanying adults are admitted free.) For more information, call 983-9244.
The Knoxville Police Department will hold its Halloween in the City from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 31 at Safety City, off Concord Street (between Kingston Pike and Sutherland Avenue) in Knoxville. Festivities will include free food and beverages, a costume contest, a magic show, a model train display, clowns, games and candy. Admission is free. For more information, call 215-7103.
