Early totals from United Way of Blount County's Gas Day Friday show an increase over last year.

Volunteers pumped gas, cleaned windshields and accepted tips as donations for United Way's 2008 campaign.

Totals from the morning's tip collections totaled $3,050, or about $250 more than last year's morning tip totals. Afternoon collections had not yet been tabulated.

Sharon Moore, who co-chaired Gas Day with Boyce Smith, was very encouraged by the morning totals.

"We appreciate the strong commitment and support from the community," Moore said. "Despite rising fuel costs, the people of Blount County once again stepped up to the plate and pitched in for United Way."

More than 200 volunteers supported Gas Day, which netted over $10,000 for United Way last year.

"Without the volunteers, it would not have been impossible," Moore said. "They truly showed Blount County what it means to live united."

In addition to the tips, United Way will receive a portion of gas sales for the day from Calloway Oil, Downey Oil and McNutt Oil.
