Announcements for October 5, 2008

Announcements run each Sunday. Announcements should be e-mailed to sports@thedailytimes.com or faxed to The Daily Times at 865-981-1175. They may also be dropped off at the mail slot on the side of The Daily Times building or at the front desk during regular business hours. Notices must arrive by the Thursday before they are to run on Sunday.

Baseball

- The 2009 Knoxville Stars 8-year-old travel baseball team (Kid Pitch) is currently looking for talented players. Players cannot turn 9 years old before May 1, 2009. For more information, please call Steve Dearstone at 423-639-2608.

- 8-Under competitive tournament team is looking for players for Spring 2009. Must be 8 years old on May 1 to qualify. The team will practice in the fall and winter in preparation for the spring season. For more information, call 803-2973.

Basketball

- William Blount wil be hosting its first annual vehicle show fundraising event on Oct. 18, with proceeds going to the 2009 AAU Stars of Tomorrow youth basketball team and to the William Blount athletic dept. Hot rods, classics, muscle cars, antiques, 4x4s, rat rods, race cars, imports, domestics, motorcyles and tractors will be welcome, with trophies awarded in all categories. There will also be an audio/custom stereo competition. There is a $10 registration fee, $15 the day the the show. Checks should be made payable to Stars of Tomorrow. Gates open at 9 a.m. for venders, 10 a.m. for participants and 11 a.m. for spectators. Admission is $5 for adults, children 6-12 $2, and kids 5-and-under free. - Maryville Biddy League tryouts for girls third and fourth grade league and the girl's fifth, sixth and seventh grade league will be held at 7-7:45 p.m. on Oct. 13-14 at the MHS gymnasium. The boys third and fourth grade league and the boys fifth, sixth and seventh grade league will have tryouts at 7-7:45 p.m. on Oct. 15-16 at the MHS gymnasium. Registration will start at 6:30 p.m. prior to each tryout. The $50 registration fee must be paid prior to the tryout. This is a tryout/draft league and all participants will not make a team. Those trying out in both leagues must attend at least one tryout session to be eligible for the draft. Any returning players that are already on a team must register and pay their fee during the registration time, but do not need to try out. - A new Maryville basketball team for girls will be formed this year for fall league. The team will consist of 7th- and 8th-grade girls. Golf

- A golf tournament will be held on Friday at the Rarity Pointe Golf Club on Highway 321 in Lenoir City to benefit the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage. This first-time event is presented by the Heritage Center Guild and includes team and individual awards, door prizes, refreshments, music, and lunch. A shotgun start at 9 a.m. will get the 4-person scramble going. There is a maximum field of 24 teams or 96 golfers. Funds raised will directly support the Heritage Center's educational and community relations activities. The entry fee is $125 per player or $500 per team. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center, located in the peaceful gateway community of Townsend, celebrates the history of East Tennessee and the Smoky Mountains and is dedicated to preserving the region's unique culture.

Weightlifting

- Cherokee Health and Fitness Center on Oct. 25 will host a fall pull, with proceeds going to benefit the Blount County Special Olympics. The Halloween theme requires that all participants wear costume to lift weights. The cost is $35 a person or $125 for a five-person team. For more information, call 681-6122.
