Election at a glance: Sales tax fails; Townsend wine passes

Among Blount County voters:
Sen. John McCain defeated Sen. Barack Obama, 35,550 to 15,250, in the presidential race.
U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander defeated his main challenger, Robert Tuke, 38, 946 to 8,663.
In the state Senate 8th District race, Doug Overbey defeated Doc Lapides, 37,680 to 8,636.
The Local Sales Tax Referendum failed, 30,871 against, with 18,124 voting in favor of the increase.
In the City of Alcoa Commission race, Clayton Bledsoe and Ken White won the two vacant seats. Bledsoe garnered 1,884 votes; White, 1,792 votes; while George Williams netted 1,757 votes.
In the City of Louisville Aldermen race, Steve Dixon and Joe Gallagher took the two vacant seats, with Dixon getting 867 votes, Gallagher 667 votes, and Michael Mund receiving 463 votes.
In the City of Maryville school board race, Doug Jenkins and Charles West won the two seats. Jenkins received 6,168 votes, West, 6,082 votes, and Bethany Pope received 5,523 votes.
The totals have yet to be certified and do not include a small number of provisional ballots.
