Snips $4 Singles offers $4 haircuts for single parents, kids

Alicia Burchell will provide low-cost haircuts Wednesday for single parents and their children through Snips $4 Singles at her shop, Glamour Salon & Spa, 116 Main Road, Maryville. Walk-in customers can stop by between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. for a $4 wet cut only, or they can make an appointment to come in after 5 p.m. by calling 233-0443. Snips $4 Singles will continue on the second Wednesday of each month.

Classical guitarist Lily Afshar to present concert Monday

Knoxville Guitar Society will present world-renowned classical guitarist Lily Afshar in concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, 2931 Kingston Pike, Knoxville. Born in Tehran, Afshar was 10 years old when she began learning the guitar. At Florida State University, she became the first woman in the world to gain a Doctorate of Music in guitar performance and has since received numerous accolades. She currently is head of the University of Memphis guitar program. Admission is $15 for adults; $12 KGS members; and $5 students. Children under 12 admitted free. All seating is general admission. Tickets will be available at the door. Audience members are invited to meet Afshar at a free reception immediately following the concert. Top of The Plaza serving afternoon tea beginning Dec. 9

Top of The Plaza, 200 E. Broadway Ave., Maryville, will serve afternoon tea from 1 to 3 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month beginning Dec. 9. The menu will include a range of teas including black, herbal, white and oolong in addition to savories, scones, jam, tartlets and cookies. Egg basket class set for Dec. 12 at Hobby Lobby in Maryville

AAUW, LWV to hold joint meeting Monday at MC

The American Association of University Women Maryville Branch and the League of Women Voters of Blount County will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Maryville College, Bartlett Hall, room 101 in a joint celebration to mark the successful work of both organizations in the 2008 Woman-to-Woman Voter Campaign, which focused primarily on increasing voter participation of women in Blount County in the 2008 presidential election. All volunteers of the campaign, AAUW members, LWVBC members, prospective members and guests are invited to attend. The featured speaker will be Blount County Election Commissioner Libby Breeding.

Footloose in the Foothills fundraiser set for Dec. 4

The SCHAS program (Senior Citizens Home Assistance Service Inc.) will present its second annual fundraiser, "Footloose in the Foothills," from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Capitol Theatre and Preservation Plaza, both in downtown Maryville. The selected vendors will have many unique gifts. There will be door prizes, refreshments and gift wrapping. The $10 tickets may be purchased at the door or at Bank East or Anderson Rentals.
