Libel, slander Writers' Guild meeting topics

John Winemiller, a lawyer with the Maryville firm of Merchant and Gould, will lay out the writer's essential on libel, slander, copyright and intellectual property law at 7 p.m. Thursday at a meeting of the Knoxville Writers' Guild.

The meeting will take place at the Laurel Theatre at the corner of Laurel Avenue and 16th Street in Fort Sanders. It is open to the public. Refreshments will be served, and a $1 donation is requested.

Winemiller said his talked is aimed at helping writers get a better understanding of what work can be subject to copyright.

Heart-healthy cooking class offered

Make your heart a healthier one this Valentine's Day and celebrate American Heart Month by indulging in some heart-healthy recipes. Join the Healthy Living Kitchen of the University of Tennessee Medical Center for a special cooking class, Heart Healthy Indulgence, at noon Feb. 11. The class will be held in the education room at UT Medical Center's Heart Lung Vascular Institute.

Cost of the program, which includes the lesson on preparing a delicious heart healthy Valentine's Day menu and a meal, is $20. Advance registration is required by calling 305-6877.

Sharp named Almost Dead poet of month

Joe Sharp has been selected as Poet Laureate Storyteller for February by the Almost Dead Poet Society. Sharp has a talent for writing both songs and poems.

In addition, Sharp plays the guitar.

The Almost Dead Poet Society meets the second Tuesday of each month at 2:30 p.m. at Everett Park Senior Center.

Lost Cajuns will host Mardi Gras party Feb. 14

The local Louisiana Social group The Lost Cajuns of East Tennessee will hold its fifth annual Mardi Gras Gala at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at Calhoun's on The River in Knoxville.
