There was a surprise in all those boxes and junk: a grenade.
Authorities removed a grenade discovered Wednesday afternoon by a woman who stopped to go through some boxes at the curb of a McMaster Place residence.
Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said the vacant house had recently been cleaned out and the boxes set outside.
Officers were called to the scene at about 5:30 p.m.
Crisp said the Maryville Police Department has an agreement with the Knox County Hazardous Device Unit to remove and detonate bombs.
Authorities took the grenade to the soccer fields at Vulcan Materials, blocked off roads into the area, and detonated it at approximately 8 p.m. Wednesday.
