LEXINGTON — Western Tennessee's Henderson County, already hit hard by high unemployment, has suffered another blow with an announcement that the largest plant the county will lay off 200 workers.

Officials at Leroy-Somer, which makes industrial generators in Lexington, notified the employees on Wednesday that they would be laid off Friday.

The company is a division of Emerson Company, based in St. Louis.

The Jackson Sun reported that spokeswoman Emily Umbright said the layoffs were a result of the economy. About 675 employees will remain at the plant.

Henderson County's unemployment was 15.3 percent in February, compared to the statewide average of 9.1 percent.
