It's a two-for-one deal at this month's Lunch and Learn program of the Blount Memorial Cancer Center, as there are two speakers for this month's one luncheon program. First, Mane Support founder and executive director Kim Henry presents "Healing with Horses," during which she'll talk about using equine-assisted counseling to address the grief and loss issues of children and adults. Then, Joe Tolson, a volunteer with The Center for Courageous Kids, talks about the year-round medical camp that's located in Scottsville, Ky. that serves children suffering from chronic medical conditions or life-threatening illnesses and their families.
The Lunch and Learn program -- or programs -- takes place tomorrow from noon to 1 p.m. in the Cancer Center's conference rooms 1 and 2 on the second floor. Registrations are required and can be made by calling 980-5038.
Even though yesterday was the official end to Sun Safety Week, it doesn't mean sun-safety precautions no longer need to be followed. Remember, sunburns can happen even on the cloudiest of days, and concrete, sand, water and snow reflect 85 to 90 percent of the sun's UV rays. Because of these things, the Sun Safety Alliance reminds you -- and those traveling through the great outdoors with you -- to take the proper sun-safety precautions by wearing protective clothing, eyewear and sunscreen.
The Alzheimer's Support Group meets on Friday, June 12 at 2 p.m. in the Sunflower Room at MorningView Village, Blount Memorial's Senior Community. The free group is designed for the family members of Alzheimer's disease patients, and more information is available by calling 980-4894.
Tonight's the regular monthly meeting of Survivors of Suicide, a support group for anyone who has lost a loved one to suicide. The group begins at 7 p.m. in the Blount Memorial Hospital auditorium. For more information, call 984-4223.
The menu of weight loss surgery options, which includes gastric bypass, banding and sleeve procedures, will be discussed in depth on Thursday, June 11 at 6 p.m. in the Blount Memorial Hospital auditorium. Surgeons Dr. Mark Colquitt and Dr. Jonathan Ray will present information and answer questions from attendees who may be considering weight loss surgery. Register to attend -- or ask about qualifications for surgery -- by calling 977-4673.
Mark your calendar for Sunday's Proud to Be an American celebration, which just so happens to fall on Flag Day. Local military mom Carol Russell has worked with other community members to put together the event, which honors our area's veterans -- as well as those active military members still fighting for Americans' freedom. Festivities begin at 2 p.m. on Broadway Avenue and include a parade that will end at the Greenbelt Pavilion and Amphitheater behind the Blount County Courthouse. The event is free, and the community is invited to attend.
Medic Regional Blood Center hosts a blood collection drive from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Maryville Housing Authority, located at 311 Atlantic Ave. in Maryville. Medic reminds donors that they can give every 56 days.
This Week in Health is provided by Blount Memorial Hospital.
