GREENEVILLE — A federal jury in Greeneville has convicted a former Hamblen County sheriff's deputy of violating the civil rights of women he threatened to arrest.

The Citizen Tribune of Morristown reported the verdict was returned Monday against 34-year-old Dexter L. Morris Jr., who was accused of using his position to coerce women to have sex with him. Several women said they were victims in 2004 and 2005.

He was indicted in two incidents, including one in which a single mother of two, caught with a small amount of marijuana, said Morris ordered her to have sex with him in a police car to avoid arrest.

The jury also convicted him of lying to FBI investigators, according to The Knoxville News Sentinel.

U.S. District Court Judge Ronnie Greer ordered Morris jailed after the verdict was returned and set sentencing for Nov. 2.
