Wednesday farmers' market opens today

The Maryville Farmers' Market is opening a second farmers' market, set to hold its grand opening from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Anderson Lumber Co. parking lot in Alcoa. It will be open each Wednesday through Sept. 16. Rocky Branch Community Center will provide music today.

Customers can shop at the Wednesday market and also the Saturday market in downtown Maryville.

Tag class offered at Fine Arts Blount

Tag, You're It! This art class will teach you how to make tags for scrapbook pages, packages, cards, books, etc. and will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. June 25 at Fine Arts Blount, 106 E. Grainger Co. to host annual tomato festival

The Grainger County Tomato Festival will be held July 24-26 at Rutledge Middle School, located on Highway 11W. It is one of East Tennessee's largest free festivals and features fun for the whole family. Events include the famous Tomato Wars, Mater Madness 5K run on Saturday, art show and car show. There will be plenty of good food and three stages of continuous music.

Large quantities of fresh Grainger County tomatoes and other local fruits and vegetables will be available for sale.

Dance challenge at St. Andrew's

The third annual Knoxville Showcase and Dance Challenge will be held Aug. 22 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 314 W. Broadway in Maryville.

Dancing begins at noon and will be judged by David Madeiros of Nashville. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m. A freshly cooked gourmet meal prepared by a chef on the premises will be served at 6 p.m. During dinner there will be a fashion show of ballroom dance wear, by Lisa Biagi.

New Earth Fare opens today

Earth Fare, the healthy supermarket, opens a new store at 8 a.m. today in Bearden.

The store, which is based in Asheville, N.C., offers a healthy variety of organic, local and nutritious foods. There is a full service meat, poultry and seafood department that is antibiotic and hormone free, a cheese department, an on site bakery and a vitamin and body care department.

The new location is 140 N. Forest Park Blvd. in Knoxville. Opening week activities will include live music, a bike raffle, sampling of healthy foods, cheese carvings, children's activities and burgers for a buck.

Five percent of the proceeds from the first three days will be donated to Beardsley Community Farm, which is dedicated to furthering sustainable urban agriculture.
