Applause for Tapner named award winner, Johnson graduates from UT, and Alexander to attend conference

Friends: Tapner named award winner

Ashleigh Tapner, of Maryville, has been recognized as a United States National Honor Student Award winner. She attends Carpenters Middle School. Her name will appear in the United States Achievement Academy's Official Yearbook which is published nationally.

Ashleigh is the daughter of Helen Shaffer, of Maryville and granddaughter of Jerry and Donna Edwards, of Maryville.

Campbell promoted to 4th degree

Tony Campbell, 52, of Friendsville, was recently promoted to 4th degree black belt in Isshinryu Karate. He is the assistant chief instructor at Hatchers Martial Arts in Maryville. He has been practicing karate at Hatchers for 15 years and also holds a blue belt in Gracie Jiujitsu.

Johnson graduates from UT

William Eric Johnson graduated May 29 from University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in Memphis. He graduated with honors, receiving a Doctor of Medicine degree.

Johnson is a 2004 graduate of Maryville College and a 2000 graduate of Maryville High School. He will be starting his internship and residency at UT Medical Center in Knoxville in July.

He is the son of Bill and Brenda Johnson, of Maryville.

Alexander to attend conference

April Alexander, a senior at William Blount High School, has been selected to attend the 2009 Congressional Student Leadership Conference, CSI: Forensic Sciences, sponsored by LeadAmerica. The CSLC is a college accredited invitational leadership program for academically talented and promising young leaders from across the United States and internationally.

The CSLC CSI: Forensics Science is held at Bentley University in Boston. Students meet forensics experts, crime scene specialists, government agents and other professionals, engage in laboratory exercises and participate in interactive leadership workshops.

April is the daughter of Penny Alexander and Danny Alexander. Her stepmother is Retha Alexander. Grandparents are Ray and Lila Alexander, of Loudon and Johnny and Ruth Large, of Sevierville.

April plans to attend the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a major in chemistry and forensic science.
