Flying Dolphins finish fifth at Smoky Mountain Invitational

Three event victories and eight second-place finishes on the second day of the Smoky Mountain Invitational swim meet helped the Maryville-Alcoa Flying Dolphins climb seven spots to a fifth-place finish Sunday at Springbrook Pool.
Drew Willoughby took first place in the boys 8-and-under 25-yard freestyle, and Eli Tate won the boys 8-and-under 25y backstroke. The Flying Dolphins' mixed 8-and-under 100y freestyle relay team also finished first.
The Green Meadow Swim Team, which earned four top-10 finishes Sunday after piling up six top-fives Saturday, ended up 18th in the final team standings.
Swimmers 10 years old and younger competed in Sunday's events.
Tate also was second in the boys 8-and-under 25y backstroke, while Willougby added a second-place finish in the boys 8-and-under 100y individual medley.
Ethan Hathcock of the Flying Dolphins came in second in the boys 8-and-under 25y freestyle and third in the boys 8-and-under 50y freestyle. Taiga Ikeguchi was runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle and 100y IM for 9- and 10-year-old boys. Zach Tate finished second in the boys 9-10 25y butterfly.
Bailey Carnes gave the Flying Dolphins their only top-three finish of the day in the girls competitions, taking third in the 8-and-under 25y butterfly.
In addition to their relay win, the Flying Dolphins were second in the boys 9-10 100y medley relay and the mixed 9-10 100y freestyle relay.
Sarah-Kate Rines led Green Meadow with a fifth-place finish in the girls 9-10 25y breaststroke. Abby Minor was sixth in the girls 8-and-under 25y backstroke and tied for sixth in the girls 8-and-under 25y freestyle.
Green Meadow also came in seventh in the girls 8-and-under 100y freestyle relay.
Village Green ran away with the overall team title with 1,749 points, nearly 900 points ahead of second-place Knoxville Racquet Club and the rest of the 32-team field. The Flying Dolphins piled up 655.5 points, and Green Meadow had 164 points.
In Saturday's events for boys and girls 11 and older, Trenton Reed won a pair of first-place medals for Green Meadow in the boys 11-12 50y backstroke and boys 11-12 50y butterfly, and finished second in the boys 11-12 100y IM.
AJ Anglin of Green Meadow was third in the girls 15-18 100y freestyle and fourth in the girls 15-18 50y freestyle. Teammate Hannah Rines was fifth in the 11-12 50y breaststroke, and added sixth-place finishes in the girls 11-12 50y freestyle and girls 11-12 100y freestyle.
Green Meadow's mixed 11-12 200y freestyle relay team also finished sixth, and the mixed 15-18 200y freestyle relay came in ninth.
