The heat is on, and for those who are considered to be overweight or obese, the summer months can be hard with the extra pounds. Did you know that arthritis affects nearly 300,000 children in the United States? This month -- deemed Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month -- the Arthritis Foundation tries to spotlight juvenile arthritis, also educating the impact it can have on children, teens and families. The cause of the condition is not known, but experts say it's not contagious and there's no evidence that food, toxins, allergies or vitamin deficiencies play a role in its development.

Common symptoms of juvenile arthritis include pain, swelling, tenderness and stiffness of joints, causing limited range of motion; joint contracture, which results from holding a painful joint in a flexed position for an extended period; damage to joint cartilage and bone, which can lead to joint deformity and impaired use of the joint; and altered growth of bone and joints leading to short stature.

A free Family Birthing Center Tour happens today from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Blount Memorial Hospital for expectant moms and their support people. Additionally, a second opportunity to see the center and have an overview of some of its policies and procedures happens on Thursday, also from 6:30-7:30 p.m., for those delivering at Blount Memorial. Call 981-3983 to register for either offering.
