A July cold snap has broken low temperature records in the higher elevations of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The previous record low temperature for July, recorded at Mt. LeConte and filed with the National Weather Service, was 38 degrees, which occurred in both 1988 and 1993.

According to park spokesman Bob Miller, that record has been broken twice this month: a low of 35 degrees was recorded Saturday morning on Mt. LeConte and then, on Wednesday morning, the temperature dipped to a record low of 33 degrees.
