McKENZIE -- It took 167 years, but a Tennessee college has graduated to university status.
Bethel College officially became Bethel University during ceremonies on Saturday, when it incorporated a new charter. 167-year-old college became a university Saturday.
The Jackson Sun reports that a continual growth pattern prompted Bethel's board of trustees in March to vote to change from Bethel College to Bethel University to maintain that momentum.
Bethel is a Cumberland Presbyterian-affiliated liberal arts school founded in McLemoresville in 1842 as Bethel Seminary.
Bethel had a record spring 2009 enrollment of 2,626, and its master of business administration program is the second largest in Tennessee.
