How chemotherapy works topic for Lunch and Learn

How does chemotherapy work? If you don’t know, you’ll want to hear clinical oncology pharmacist Aubrey Waddell talk to participants of this week’s Lunch and Learn at the Blount Memorial Cancer Center, which happens Tuesday, from noon to 1 p.m. in the center’s conference rooms 1 and 2 on the second floor. A light lunch will be provided. To register, call 865-980-5038.

Parents of adult children who won’t grow up have an outlet for support beginning this week. On Tuesday, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Blount Memorial Hospital auditorium, parents can learn ways to help set limits and create opportunities for independence for their adult children. The new group — Parents of Adult Children Support Group — meets the second Tuesday of each month, and more information is available by calling 984-4223.

If the stork is stopping by your house later this year — or early in 2010, you’re invited to attend the Early Pregnancy and Introduction to the Family Birthing Center tour that happens on Thursday, at Blount Memorial. Those interested in seeing the birthing center should call 981-3983 by 10 a.m. to register for the program, which happens from noon to 1 p.m.

A Medic Regional Blood Center blood drive happens on Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Watts Chiropractic, located at 1011 W. Broadway Ave. in Maryville. Those interested in donating are reminded that they must allow 56 days between donations. For more information, visit www.medicblood.org.

The kids have headed back to the classroom, and “class” also is in session on Thursday, for adults wanting to learn about the surgical weight loss options of the Blount Memorial Weight Management Center, which include gastric banding, sleeve and bypass procedures. At 6 p.m., bariatric surgeons Dr. Mark Colquitt and Dr. Jonathan Ray host a free Surgical Weight Loss Lecture Series in the Blount Memorial Hospital auditorium for those considering surgical weight loss options. Family members of Alzheimer’s disease patients are reminded of the Friday support group meeting at 2 p.m. at MorningView Village, Blount Memorial Hospital’s senior community. For more information, call 980-4894.

Don’t forget that Saturday brings the arrival of the 33rd annual Foothills Striders Scholar’s Run, which is the second leg of the Healthy Blount Triple Crown of Running. The race begins at 8 a.m. with the fun run/walk beginning at 8:05 a.m. on the Maryville College campus. Check-in begins at 6:45 a.m. Those interested in pre-registering can do so for $15 by Thursday, at 3 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation Office on S. Everett High Road or at www.parksrec.com.
