MADISONVILLE — A Madisonville man went to jail after he allegedly pulled a gun on his wife at their residence on Hiwassee Road about 5:15 Thursday afternoon.

Michael Bryan Powell, 46, fled the scene but was later stopped and arrested.

According to the arrest warrants, Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy Jimmy Fischer responded to a domestic call where a man had pulled a pistol on his wife.

Sources said that Powell had pointed the gun at his wife, Connie, but she reversed her car before he could pull the trigger.

Sheriff Bill Bivens, Det. Lt. Travis Jones, Det. Sgt. Doug Brannon, oncoming Deputy Chase Nipper and Captain Bill Johnson all responded after learning the suspect had fled the area.

Fischer spoke with Mrs. Powell at Hiwassee College, where she fled to for safety.

She said her husband had pushed her and pointed a gun at her and that she was trying to leave when he pointed the gun at her again, threatening to harm her.

Officers searched the area of Anderson Road, Red Ankle Road and Williams Road for Powell without locating him.

Just after 6 p.m., MCSO Deputy Brian Turpin was called to investigate another domestic call on Sweetwater-Vonore Road, but it was cancelled when Criminal Interdiction Officer BJ Johnson settled the dispute, prior to Turpin's arrival.

Turpin spotted the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop of the vehicle driven by Powell.

Powell was taken into custody on the charge of aggravated assault by domestic violence/abuse.
