A 53-year-old Rockford man was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and resisting arrest after police reported he was allegedly chasing another man with a pipe and was combative with officers at the scene.
Avron Bentz Cospy, Russell Road, Rockford, was arrested Wednesday at 5:52 p.m. after witnesses reported to authorities that a man with a green object -- later identified as a pipe -- was chasing another man in a threatening way. The man with the pipe "was holding the object above his head as if he was going to strike" the other man, according to an Alcoa police report.
"Cospy was yelling and appeared to be very agitated," it said.
Officers reported ordering Cospy to sit on the ground, but the man refused and "immediately put his right hand into the front of his shorts and pulled his shirt over it consistent with someone who is concealing a weapon that are about to use." Cospy allegedly refused to show officers his hands and, according to the report, "yelled for me to shoot him numerous times."
Officers held Cospy at gunpoint until backup arrived and the reporting officer deployed his Taser on the man, but he reportedly ripped the probes from his shirt and fled toward the front door of his residence.
When officers attempted to confront Cospy physically, the man allegedly swung at them and a second Taser was deployed unsuccessfully on the man.
Cospy ran into his residence, but after 5 to 10 minutes he came out and was taken into custody without incident.
Cospy was charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest/halt/frisk. He was being held in lieu of bonds totaling $2,000 pending a 9 a.m. Sept. 10 hearing in Blount County General Sessions Court.
