National Suicide Prevention Week oberved nationwide

As part of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, this week is recognized as National Suicide Prevention Week. The goal of the month and week is to raise awareness of this major cause of death, educate the public of suicide warning signs and get information out on how to help someone who may be suicidal. There are several things that every diabetic must know, and the Diabetes Support Group is inviting you to find out what those things are from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday. Kimberly Lay, physician assistant and certified diabetes educator, will present The Top 10 Things Every Diabetic Needs to Know in the Blount Memorial Cancer Center conference room 1, on the center's second floor. The Parents of Adult Children Support Group meets from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, in the Blount Memorial Hospital auditorium. The support group is designed to help set limits and create opportunities to give adult children their independence. Members of the group meet the second Tuesday of each month. Lean more about radiation oncology from Radiation Oncologist and Cancer Center Medical Director Dr. Albert Petty and Board Certified Medical Physicist Mark Wyatt. They will present at a Lunch and Learn session from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Blount Memorial Cancer Center conference room, on the center's second floor. Petty and Wyatt will be educating about staging and medical work-ups that decide courses of treatment. For more information or to register, call 980-5038.
Blount Memorial Senior Services offers a Caregiver Support Group from 7-8 p.m. on Wednesday, on the 3-east floor of Blount Memorial Hospital. It also provides free caregiver consultations, which give caregivers an opportunity to discuss their situations and explore possible strategies and assistance resources, one-on-one, with a Senior Services representative. Surgeons Dr. Mark Colquitt and Dr. Jonathan Ray will speak about the surgical and laparoscopic treatments of obesity that are available at 6 p.m. on Thursday, in the Blount Memorial Hospital auditorium as part of the Surgical Weight Loss Lecture Series. An early pregnancy and introduction to the family birthing center class will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, in the Family Birthing Center classroom. For more information or to register, call 981-3983. Call by 10 a.m. Thursday to register for the class.
At 2 p.m. on Friday, Blount Memorial Senior Services offers an Alzheimer's Support Group, which will meet in the Sunflower Room of MorningView Village. The group is for family members of Alzheimer's disease patients and it meets the second Friday of each month. For more information, call 980-4894.
