MADISONVILLE -- A Madisonville woman and her live-in boyfriend were arrested after police responded to a domestic disturbance and found an elderly woman lying in bed, clothed and covered in urine.

Monroe County Sergeant Sonny Smart said that he spoke with Patrice Gay, 43, Ballplay Road, who said she and Alford Chastain had been in an argument that became physical when he threw her to the ground.

Chastain, 57, said Gay attacked him, clawing his chest. Smart noted Chastain had marks on his chest. He also noted that both subjects appeared to be intoxicated, speaking with slurred speech and not able to walk without assistance.

"There was a helpless elderly woman staying at the residence who is in the final stages of Alzheimer's disease," Smart said. "She had been lying clothed, covered in urine and was very distraught."

Monroe County EMS transported the woman to Sweetwater ER for medical purposes, Smart said.

Smart asked Gay about the woman's medication, but she was so incoherent that she could not say where it was or how much she was supposed to take, he said.

Both Chastain and Gay were charged with domestic assault and willful neglect of the elderly.

Gay was also charged with vandalism after she destroyed Sgt. Smart's emergency signals in his patrol unit and attempted to shatter the rear window of the car after her arrest.
