Former Maryville College football captain Russ Harris died Wednesday afternoon following a diving accident off the coast of Sarasota, Fla.
"The entire Maryville College football family is deeply saddened with the loss of Russ Harris. Russ overcame two major injuries to become an All-USA South defensive tackle and leader of the 2008 football team," head football coach Tony Ierulli said. "Most importantly, we lost a good friend to all the players, coaches and staff. Russ was a warrior throughout his Maryville College career. He was a true Fighting Scot."
Harris came to MC from Northport, Fla., where he was an All-State player for the Venice High School Indians. He started two games as a freshman. He was later injured in the course of his career as a Scot but came back to close out an outstanding career. A memorial service will take place in Venice on Monday at 4 p.m.
