A Maryville College administrator's service will soon gain new life in the institution's annals.
Maryville College held a retirement reception for Martha Hess, who's worked as the college's registrar for 35 years, during its homecoming weekend. Maryville Mayor Tom Taylor made a surprise appearance, and proclaimed Martha Hess Day within the city's limits.
Taylor's proclamation came only two days after college officials presented Hess with the Maryville College Medallion, which is its highest award.
Hess became the college's registrar in 1974. She has served on numerous MC committees and councils including Staff Council, the Academic Life Council, the Curriculum Task Force, the Admissions Committee and the Outstanding Senior Selection Committee.
Hess was also asked in 1999 to chair the Traditions and Values Commission, which was a group formed to carry out the MC Window of Opportunity's first phase.
She was presented the college's Alumni Citation in 2005. Hess is also a two-time winner of the Outstanding Administrator Award and a recipient of the Sharon Murphy Crane Award, which recognizes the staff member who goes the extra mile to get the job done. Maryville College named her a "Legend of Anderson Hall" in 2008.
