It is Healthy Lung Month -- focusing attention on lung health issues -- and the Better Breather Support Group will meet this week to talk about how it is important to keep active by volunteering. Better Breathers is an informal, educational support group for anyone, patient or caregiver, having to deal with breathing problems such as asthma, emphysema, bronchitis and other breathing disorders. The support groups meets from 11 a.m.-noon on Thursday, in the Blount Memorial Medical Fitness classroom, on the 2-east floor of the hospital. Volunteer Services director Connie Slingluff will lead the presentation.

Another way to keep active this month is through the Foothills Regional Memory Walk. The annual event is held to raise money for the fight against Alzheimer's disease. It will be held Saturday on the campus of Maryville College. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 11 a.m. For more information or to sign up, visit www.alz.org/tn or call 544-6288.

On Thursday, surgeons Dr. Jonathan Ray and Dr. Mark Colquitt will be present "Surgical Weight Loss Options" as part of the Surgical Weight Loss Lecture Series at 7 p.m. in the Blount Memorial Hospital auditorium. If you are pregnant and want to know more about Blount Memorial's Family Birthing Center, take a tour of the center from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday. Blount Memorial Senior Services offers support for caregivers through consultations and a support group. Caregivers also can discuss their situations and explore possible strategies and resources at a free one-on-one consultation with a Senior Services representative. For more information on the support group or to set up a consultation, call 977-5744.

It also is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and on Saturday, you can join the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the World's Fair Park in Knoxville. The race raises funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivors and honors those who have lost their battle with breast cancer.

There are two different locations where you can donate blood through the Medic Regional Blood Center on Thursday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Stop by to donate in the third-floor training room in the Blount County Sheriff's Office, 940 E. Lamar Alexander Parkway, or visit a Medic mobile at the City of Maryville, 404 W. Broadway Ave.
