The Fontana Historical Association and North Shore Road Association will host a program beginning at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Swain County Center for the Arts in Bryson City, N.C., entitled "The Creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park - Stories from the Other Side of the Mountain."
"In a recent news release to the local papers, Great Smoky Mountains National Park Superintendent Dale Ditmanson related how they had '...reconnected with many of those families who sacrificed their land, their homes and neighbors to make way for the Park's creation,' during the events surrounding the Park's 75th Anniversary Celebration," said Linda Hogue, chairman of the North Shore Road Association and Fontana Historical Association.
"As far as I know, no one asked anyone from the North Shore area of Fontana Lake for their stories about sacrifice," Hogue said. "There have been no events recognizing the sacrifices by Western North Carolina people for the World War II efforts in the building of Fontana Dam, which resulted in the 'second park' taking," said Hogue.
