The opening of the new Blount County Animal Center is just days away.
Workers from Bocks Moving Systems started moving furnishings into the facility, located behind the Boys and Girls Club, 241 Currie Ave., Maryville.
"We had a moving truck out there," said Blount County Mayor Jerry Cunningham. "We moved a lot of stuff in. ... Air conditioning is on, the water is on. We're pretty much ready to go."
The County Mayor's Office will make an announcement once the facility is in operation. Once that happens, the public will be able to surrender animals at the shelter instead of at the old Hubbard School. Animals will also be available for adoption for a nominal fee that will include spaying, neutering and rabies shots.
Stray animals will be held at the shelter for a minimum of three days. Pets with tags will be held five days to give the owners a chance to claim them.
