UT's Douglas makes transition to tackle with ease

KNOXVILLE -- Seven months ago, Aaron Douglas switched positions.

The 6-foot-7, 280-pound redshirt freshman made the transition from tight end to offensive tackle before spring practice began in order to shore up depth at a position in dire need of help.

Now, with four starts to his credit at right tackle, the former Maryville High standout says he has begun to feel at ease in his new role.

"There was always a bit of nerves starting your first game and everything," said Douglas, who got his first start in UT's 34-23 victory over Ohio on Sept. 26.

"I just think I'm getting more comfortable, not only with the system but just being on the field and being a starter. I think every game you get a little bit more comfortable, and you kind of know your role, what's expected of you and what you're expected to do."

Perhaps it's no surprise that Douglas has gradually grown comfortable at tackle. His father, David, also played at Tennessee and for six years in the NFL as an offensive lineman with the Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots.

For first-year UT coach Lane Kiffin, Aaron Douglas' combination of big-man size and athletic ability made for a "perfect system fit" on the offensive line.
