Justin Ridge's rookie season as Greenback football coach will end facing the man who jump-started it all.
Although the Cherokees (3-7) failed to make the playoffs, Ridge will coach an 11th game on the road Tuesday against former Greenback coach Bill Satterfield and Sequoyah (0-10).
The idea of an extra game was something the two friends began discussing before the 'Kees loss to Tellico Plains two weeks ago. With Greenback's playoff hopes basically shot, Ridge saw the opportunity for a young team to gain some extra game experience.
The 7 p.m. contest with the Chiefs not only presents Ridge's first shot at a victory away from Cooper Field, but it puts him on the sideline across from Satterfield, who gave Ridge his start in coaching eight years ago. Back in 2001, Satterfield brought the young coach on board as an assistant with the 'Kees wrestling program. Ridge joined Satterfield's football staff at Greenback the following fall and eventually joined him at Grace Christian Academy when Satterfield left the Cherokees.
