For a day, Union Grove Middle School's colors weren't orange and blue. They were red.

The school's Red Ribbon Committee recently organized festivities for Red Ribbon Week, which is the nation's oldest and largest drug prevention program. Cpl. Donna Sparks, student resource officer (SRO) for both Union Grove schools, and Reba Combs, the middle school's nurse, did most of the planning, said Principal Alicia Lail.

Nearly 30 students turned in posters featuring their own anti-drug slogan prior to Thursday's assembly. Blount County Sheriff's Office Capt. Warren Headrick, Lt. Jeff Clark and Sgt. Chris Cantrell judged the poster competition.

The three judges selected a winner from each grade based upon four criteria: creativity, amount of effort, eye-catching appeal and their drug slogan.

Mariah Swaney won the sixth-grade division. The seventh-grade winner's name can't be published because the student did not have a media release. Jessica Cody won the eighth-grade division.
