Lucky dogs: First two surrendered animals at new Blount County Animal Center adopted

The new Blount County Animal Center opened Monday with a pair of adoptions for the first two animals brought in.

Less than five hours after being dropped off at the shelter, 241 Currie Ave., Maryville, the two dogs had a new family.

Sheiba is a 6-month-old shepherd mix. Buttercup is an 8-year-old mixed breed. They were adopted by Amber Proffitt, who turned to the shelter to find some new furry friends after a recent loss.

"My children and I have been looking for some new dogs," said Proffitt, who adopted both animals. "I had a (German) shepherd for 11 years that recently passed away. We wanted to come to the shelter and save a life."

Her son, Henry, 3, accompanied her to the shelter. While there, Harper decided to adopt Buttercup for her other son, 9-year-old Marley.

The Animal Center opened at 8 a.m. Monday morning. "We've had a good first day," said Amy Cowden, assistant to County Mayor Jerry Cunningham. "We've had about 10 animals brought in. It's been a very busy."

The public can surrender animals at the shelter, located behind the Boys and Girls Club, Animals are also be available for adoption for a nominal fee that will include spaying, neutering and rabies shots.

The animal shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The phone number is 980-6244. Stray animals will be held at the shelter for a minimum of three days. Pets with tags will be held five days to give the owners a chance to claim them.
