Today they added a sign that simply states "road narrows". Thats going to save someone after a head on collision with oncoming traffic!

The new $1.4 million bridge has a major flaw, emptying traffic into one lane at a blind curve in the road. Traffic from the opposite direction also becomes one way causing a crash or back up situation for one of the vehicles. At the minimum, some large pot mirrors need to be installed so that traffic has some warning of oncoming cars before the old Kinzel bridge is closed.

Blount County Highway Superintendent Bill Dunlap is reviving a plan to put a covered bridge in Townsend.

The plan is to turn the old one-lane concrete bridge at Kinzel Springs into a covered bridge for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The bridge is adjacent to a new $1.4 million two-lane concrete bridge on Cameron Road over Little River that was completed in August. Both bridges have remained open, but the county will be closing the old bridge to vehicular traffic this week.

Dunlap said that by the time the county hires a consulting firm/engineer and gets an actual drawing, it will likely be late winter or early spring before the work can begin.

Once under way, Dunlap estimated it would take a month to six weeks to complete the bridge work.
