About an hour before kickoff Friday night of a Class 6A playoff opener at Maryville's Shields Stadium, neither the scoreboard nor the field's lights worked.

The absence of either or both would have been a better alternative for visiting Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett. Capitalizing on a plethora of key turnovers, the top-ranked Rebels were surgical in a 41-0 dissection of the Indians (5-6).

With the win, Quarles became the storied program's all-time winningest coach with a 147-11 career mark and also ensured Maryville (10-1) another home playoff game. The Rebels will host a second-round affair Friday at 7 p.m. Against McMinn County, which ousted Oak Ridge, 12-7.

The prideful Indians were humbled almost from the outset; Maryville took its opening possession, converted two fourth-down attempts and seized command when Philip Juhlin hit Stian Romberg from 34 yards out for a touchdown. That combination would work two more times in the first half for the Rebels, who commanded a 31-0 lead at the break and ushered on a running clock midway through the third quarter. Desmund Horne added Maryville's other touchdowns on a 15-yard catch-and-run from Juhlin and a 13-yard reverse.
