Heritage's Lauren Barnes moved up a spot at the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association state cross country championships Saturday, but the sophomore still left Nashville disappointed.
Barnes finished 17th with a time of 20:41.98 in the girls Class AAA race on a windy day at the Steeplechase Course at Percy Warner Park. It was a step up from her 18th place finish last year but still short of the top-15 cutoff for All-State.
Catholic's Megan Ferowich dominated, as she did in the region meet, winning in 17:47.76. John Sharpe of Oak Ridge won the boys Class AAA event in 15:50.62.
In Class A/AA, Alcoa's Morgan Scarlett-Jones and Erich Honabach each finished 91st in the girls and boys races. Scarlett-Jones, just a freshman, ran the 5K course in 25:24.03. Honabach came home in 19:39.31. Dyersburg's Loren Newsom (16:37.85) took the boys title while Red Bank's Claire Turner (19:46.20) was tops amongst A-AA girls.
