The Maryville College football team pulled a stunning upset on the road Saturday, knocking off powerhouse Christopher Newport for the first time ever, 21-14.

"A very gutsy performance," Scots coach Tony Ierulli said. "I don't think I've ever been as proud of our team as winning this game because we were absolutely undermanned going into this game."

MC quarterback Tim Conner had been doubtful to start after barely practicing all week due to a separated shoulder while star running back Rommel Hightower didn't play due to turf toe, Ierulli said. Conner did make the start however, throwing two touchdown passes and running for the game-tying score early in the fourth quarter. Conner's one-yard plunge evened the game at 14 with 11:50 to go. The Scots (4-5, 3-3 USA South) scored the game-winning touchdown with 8:29 to play on a 39-yard scoring pass from Conner to Sam McCord. Conner finished the game 11 of 17 for 165 yards. He opened the scoring with a three-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jonathan Coughron late in the first quarter.
