Although one of the supposed benefits of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association's restructuring of high school football this season was to avoid many of the rematches in second and third rounds of past playoffs, that goal appears to be unattainable given the nature of the beast.
When the second round of the postseason kicks off on Friday night, Maryville and Alcoa will be hosting very familiar foes.
After defeating Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett, 41-0 in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs, the Rebels (10-1) will face McMinn County (9-2), an opponent that Maryville blistered 49-6 on Sept. 11, the third game of the regular season. In similar fashion, the Tornadoes (11-0) will again put their unblemished record on the line in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs, this time against Christian Academy of Knoxville (10-1), the team they defeated for the District 4-AA championship just two weeks ago.
