Almost a week before the actual day denoted for the remembrance of veterans, Maryville High School has remembered them in their annual Veterans Assembly.
Veterans Day falls on Nov. 11, but MHS held the assembly on Nov. 5. The students in a Senior Transition class, which is a class that helps seniors with the move from high school to college, participated in a project where each student interviews a veteran in their lives.
Senior Transition students who brought veterans to the assembly sat in chairs in the middle of the floor to watch the speakers. The MHS Singers Choir sang a collection of songs, including "Armed Forces Medleys," "Seize the Day," "Red, White, and Blue," and "God Bless the USA."
Seniors Alex Ackermann and Sarah Lawson both sang solos during the assembly and senior Emmery Curtis was the student speaker this year.
Mrs. Dianne Rutherford, the teacher that spear-headed a majority of the planning for MHS's 16th Veterans Assembly, received an award recognizing her service and respect she pays to veterans.
The assembly was shortened from previous years and contained a short presentation of various patriotic images while the Singers performed. At the end of the assembly, the Senior Transition students gave the veterans they interviewed a spiral-bound notebook that contained the project they were required to do about their life both in and out of service.
In short, the assembly was a wonderful way for MHS students to remember the people who sacrificed so much for the nation that is present today. Regardless of whether some of the students had a relative who has served in the military, this assembly helped the student body to realize the importance of all the veterans have done in their lives.
