The Blount County Budget Committee on Monday recommended the approval of a $12.8 million appropriation request to build, furnish and equip the proposed Prospect Elementary School on Burnett Station Road.
Final approval is in the hands of the full County Commission. The money would come from either a 20-year general obligation bond or through a low- or no-interest loan program being offered by the Tennessee State School Bond Authority (TSSBA).
In other business, the committee:
Asked the County Commission to accept funding to repair the closed Binfield Road bridge. The money comes from $82,500 in grants from CSX.
Voted to accept an increase of $400,000 in the County Health Department vaccination clinic budget, increasing it to $1.2 million, to fund H1N1 flu vaccinations.
Recommended accepting a $50,000 grant to fund a new case manager for the Blount County Drug Court -- an 18-month program for non-violent drug offenders that meet certain criteria.
At the request of County Mayor Jerry Cunningham, voted to hire an independent expert to evaluate the county's debt management policies and the structure of the county debt.
