MADISONVILLE -- A Monroe County deputy and his wife were airlifted following a crash about 6 p.m. Sunday on Big Creek Road.
According to sources, Monroe County Deputy Doug Penley and his wife Maureen were riding a Honda Goldwing road-trike along Big Creek Road on their way home when the trike left the roadway and crashed into a creek.
Penley suffered a broken nose and a possible broken hip, and his wife suffered a possible broken wrist, their son said.
Emergency personnel had Lifestar and Air-Evac transport both to UT Medical Center.
Volunteers from Monroe County Rescue Squad and Mount Vernon Fire Department assisted EMS with on-scene treatment. Monroe County Deputy Jim Wall assisted Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Turley with the investigation.
The Penleys' son said the trike was his father's 60th birthday present and he had not had it very long.
